A breeding in the middle of the

Poitevin marsh.

The Shetland pony has many qualities and that the reason why I've been interested in breeding him. He is so nice, but rustic, easy to train for driving and riding and most of all, he is the idol of the children. My breeding is probably single in its kind in France: Located in the Poitevin marsh, the ponies are in semi freedom… They don't have fences, since their grounds are surrounded by water. When they change the pre one, they borrow a special boat, a large barge.

In the marsh, the ponies live almost in a wild state. They find all they need for their survival and their well being. Their food is very abundant, and at the same time varied, but not too rich, which saves us from the issues of fourbures.

Also these ponies must remain civilized and they need a regular human contact. They trust us completely and do not hesitate for example to go up on the barge in order to change of pasture.

The grass in the marsh remains always very abundant. We are not concerned with the drynesses and the ponies have a permanent access to water. The fences are natural and insuperable. We also don't have any kind of thieves problem because of the water and the difficulty of the access.

But there are also a lot of constraints for this type of breeding. A special and expensive material is needed : a barge with outboard engine, a four wheel drive  light transportable tractor on the barge, equipped with a hydraulic winch and wheels cages. It is also necessary to have meadows for the winter and the periods of floods.
